In history, there is always the question “what if?” What if the Greeks had lost to the Persians, what if Napoleon had conquered England, what if the Battle of Britain had been lost? In Operation Apocalypse, we ask one of the most intriguing questions of all: What if Hitler had been assassinated? This is where our story begins.

On July 10th, 1944 a series of events unfolded that could have changed the world, had they only succeeded. On that day, Adolf Hitler was supposed to die. The plan, codenamed Operation Valkyrie, was created by Wehrmacht officers to end his reign of terror over Germany. Historically, the plan failed and the bomb set to kill Hitler exploded in the room next to him, but Operation Apocalypse tells a different story. The Fuhrer entered the room before the bomb went off and was killed instantaneously, starting a chain of events that would see the end of the SS and the Third Reich. According to the plan, a warrant for the arrest of SS members would go out, the army would mobilize, and Germany could have been taken over during the coup. In Operation Apocalypse, the plan is followed, and a new Fuhrer is installed, the one called for in the original plan: Field Marshall Erwin Rommel. The country enters a state of emergency and the military is desperately needed on the home front. On July 12th, Germany calls an armistice with the Allies and Russia. Diplomats are immediately flown into Berlin to work out a better peace treaty. Whilst in the capital, tensions rise between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the Western Allies. The Allies are highly suspicious of their Soviet counterpart’s real objectives at the Berlin conferences, and the Soviets feel that the West and Germany are coming up with a plan to take their occupied territories in Eastern Europe. The stage has been set for a new war between former Allies.
The Soviets begin to immediately finish a plan that has been in the works for months. It was originally going to be used after Germany had been defeated, and the Americans and British troops occupied Western Europe. Only a short few modifications were needed. The plan, codenamed Operation Apocalypse was supposed to be the Soviet Union’s final strike during World War Two; instead it was to become the opening act in a third war. Although tired of war like every other country, Russia still didn’t feel that their losses had been worthwhile. This was their chance to strike back at Germany for slaughtering their civilians and burning their cities. This was to be the end of the suffering.

On July 28th, 1944, the plan went into action. Soviet troops stormed the lines, starting a war with the Allies and Germany. Operation Apocalypse had begun.
In the past year, Operation Apocalypse has changed from a short chapter to a full mod, featuring dozens of new units, hundreds of new trees and buildings, and a full storyline. At the moment, we are in the process of creating two full campaigns. Called “Operation Apocalypse: The Race to Berlin” they follow the Soviet army’s advance into Germany until January 1945. Now the interesting part of the mod begins: the rest of the story is up to you, the players. With permission from either the Project Manager, zaltar, or the Assistant Project Manager, kaoz, you can create the next chapters of the Operation Apocalypse story. Will the Soviet advance continue? Will the Allies launch a counter attack? That is completely up to you. Every time a new person launches their addition to our mod, the timeline grows, and more people can add onto that. This is truly going to be a community project.
At your disposal are the armies of eight different nations: Germany, the United States, Great Britain, Canada, France, Italy, Hungary and the USSR. Each country has its own units and ways of fighting. Parts of the other additions are a new set of trees and bushes, allowing the user to fight in the autumn months, tools to make destroyed cities, burnt out vehicles, castles, and countless ways to make Operation Apocalypse your own.The fate of Europe is truly in your hands.
